Thanking… myself? for writing here

This will not be a typical technical blog post, quite the opposite! Because today, I wanted to write a short post to thank… myself…?!?

Wait what?

Isn’t that weird? Egotistic? Egocentric? Full of myself? Well… Maybe a bit of all of this…

But there is a “real” reason I wanted to write this, and not just to admire myself like Narcissus nerd. But to thank myself for taking the time to have writen blog posts (and other notes) that helped me! And to motivate myself to keep on writing on this blog!

Now that my journey to retrieve my access to my selfhosted services, servers, etc… comes to an end, I just wanted to take the time to say to myself that previous posts on this blog had been valuable to me when I had to reset everything.

The Framework laptop series helped me configure my EndeavourOS/Archlinux system, apply the dracula theme everywhere, configuring my core tools or tweaking the power management faster. Or reminded me which Firefox add-ons I needed or how to configure the fingerprint with i3lock. Or to configure WKD with my new pgp key in 5min!

Also, thanks to my new blog deployment workflow (part 2 will follow very soon) setup just before the “incident”, it was easy to publish new articles as soon as I resetted my sourcehut access. It allowed me to start with putting words on the event, clear my head and go past the emotional state. Thanks to that post, I also recieved some supportive emails and messages that really made these days better. So thanks to the people that have reached out!

This is also why I documented my access recovery process. Maybe it can help other, but it most probably help me later some day. Even if for some software the answer for easy to find, I almost feel more confortable knowing that I can find the info on my blog first. I have a good memory of the different post I wrote, so if I know the response is on this website, I’ll first come here :).

As I’ve said in an old post (in 2020), I write on this blog mainly for myself and this time it was an even bigger proof of that! Yes, I’m happy when I find out that some posts where useful to others, and that is a good motivation too. But I simply like writing here, even if I would be the only reader. And even if some articles here might never help me (like all very old articles that are not relevant to me anyway).

I also took a lot of notes about my previous backup system, which will help me reconfigure borg a lot faster this time. And I’ve learned that I’ll need more backups of the decryption keys^^. As wrote before, I already have one more than I used too, I just need to have one safe “far” from home (=offsite backup of the keys).

Anyway, this post is already too long for such a self centered topic, so I’ll stop here with a simple advice to myself: I you, bacardi55, is reading this post in the future, I hope you didn’t stop blogging! And if you did… Well, start again, you might need it later!
